Get your free estimateYork Heat Pump Service: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
York heat pump service in San Antonio typically runs $150 – $650 for most repairs, and we stock York-compatible components on the truck so fixes on common failures happen the same day we arrive. If your heat pump is short-cycling, blowing lukewarm air, running constantly but not holding temperature, or making a grinding noise from the outdoor unit, you are likely looking at a failed compressor, reversing valve, defrost board, or contactor. The good news: these are knowable problems, the fix is usually straightforward, and we will show you the written price before any work starts. The harder news: San Antonio heat pumps log more run-hours per year than almost any other climate in the country, so a neglected York will eventually let you know.
We have walked up to York units from Alamo Heights to Castle Hills and heard the same story: the system worked fine right up until the day it did not. That is how heat pumps fail here. The heat never comes on gradually. It quits, usually during the first cold snap, and the reversing valve is often the culprit. Luis Serrano has seen this happen enough times that he keeps the conversation simple: tell us what the house is doing, and we will tell you what it needs, no guesswork and no upsell.
Which York Models This Applies To
We service the full York residential heat pump line, including the Affinity series, the LX series, and the entry-level Latitude systems. The compatibility detail that matters most is not the marketing name. It is the model number stamped on the rating plate affixed to the side of the outdoor unit. That number starts with a letter code and ends with a series designation, and it tells us the exact refrigerant type, tonnage, and electrical spec for your heat pump. If you have a York model built in the last twelve years or so, there is a good chance it uses R-410A refrigerant. Older units, especially anything installed before 2010, may still run on R-22, and that changes the repair math considerably. We will always check the plate ourselves before quoting anything.
On the parts side, we stock OEM York components where it matters for the health of the system: defrost control boards, contactors, capacitors, fan motors, and reversing valve solenoids. For some jobs, a quality aftermarket equivalent is honest and appropriate, and we will tell you when that is the case and why. We are not affiliated with York as a dealer, and that is a good thing for you. We work on nine major brands including Carrier, Trane, and Lennox, so we are not pushing a York part when a better solution exists. We are pushing the part that fixes your system and keeps your floors clean while we do it.

Signs Your York Heat Pump Service Is Failing
- The outdoor unit runs but no heat comes inside. Usually the reversing valve is stuck mid-stroke, or the compressor is not actually pumping. You will still hear the fan spin, which is why this one fools people.
- Short cycling: the system turns on, runs five minutes, shuts off, repeats. A failing defrost board or a weak capacitor will cause this. It spikes your CPS Energy bill and wears the compressor down fast.
- The unit ices over in heating mode and never enters defrost. The defrost thermostat or the defrost control board has failed. Left alone, the coil becomes a block of ice and airflow dies completely.
- A loud buzz or hum from the outdoor cabinet. The contactor is failing, or the capacitor is dead and the compressor cannot start. If you hear this, shut the system off at the thermostat and call us. Running it in this state destroys things.
- The heat pump blows warm but not hot air on a mild day. This can be low refrigerant from a slow leak at a Schrader valve or coil, or the auxiliary heat strips are not staging properly on the air handler side.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Most York heat pump repairs in the San Antonio market land between $150 and $650 installed, depending on the failed component. A capacitor or contactor swap sits at the low end. A defrost board or complicated reversing valve service sits higher. A full compressor replacement can push past that range, and we will always show you the written line-item price before any work begins. Every repair includes the part, the labor, the trip, and clean-up. We do not add surprise fees after the fact, and we never will.
| York Heat Pump Repair | Typical Installed Price (San Antonio) |
|---|---|
| Capacitor replacement | $150 – $280 |
| Contactor replacement | $150 – $250 |
| Defrost control board | $300 – $500 |
| Reversing valve service | $450 – $650 |
| Condenser fan motor | $280 – $450 |
Every repair we complete is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it is not right, we make it right. No runarounds, no fine print, no three-week warranty claim process. You call, a live person answers, and we come back.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a few things a homeowner can safely check before calling: is the thermostat set correctly, is the breaker tripped, is the air filter so clogged the system is suffocating, is the outdoor unit blocked by leaves or a fallen limb. Those checks cost nothing and sometimes reveal the whole problem. After that, we would strongly recommend you stop. A York heat pump contains a run capacitor that holds an electrical charge even with the power off, and it can hurt you. If the condenser fan is still spinning but the compressor is not running, do not open the unit, do not prod it, and do not watch a video that tells you to test live terminals. Electrical burns are real, and heat pump electrical work is not a weekend project. Call (254) 271-2545 and let us do it safely.
One dry observation from our owner: San Antonio has two seasons, hot and not-quite-as-hot, and the one cold week in February always catches somebody with a dead heat pump. We answer the phone 24 hours a day, every day, and a live person picks up. Not a voicemail tree.
FAQs
Most York heat pumps in our climate last 10 to 14 years before the repair frequency starts to climb. The run hours here in South Texas are brutal on compressors and fan motors, and systems that would last 18 years in a milder climate expire sooner here. Regular tune-ups in the $80 – $200 range help, but heat and humidity win eventually.
Some parts can be repaired or rebuilt, but almost none of them should be. A capacitor, contactor, or defrost board is a replace part, not a repair part. The cost of a rebuild versus a new component is almost never worth it, and a rebuilt part does not carry the same warranty confidence. We will always tell you if repair is a legitimate option, but in practice, replacement restores reliability and costs less over time.
Most repairs we handle are done in 60 to 90 minutes once we are on site. A reversing valve or compressor job can take three to four hours because the refrigerant has to be recovered, the new part brazed in, the system evacuated, and the charge weighed back in. We will give you a time estimate before we start, and we keep the work area drop-clothed the entire time we are inside your home.
Yes. We keep the most common failure parts stocked: capacitors, contactors, defrost boards for the Affinity and LX lines, fan motors, and reversing valve solenoids. For less common components, our San Antonio parts suppliers deliver same-day in most cases. We will always tell you honestly if a part has to be ordered, and what that timeline will look like. Call (254) 271-2545 for an exact quote on your York model, and estimates are free.
